Our Coaches

Hayden Ong

As a kid, I dabbled in Gymnastics and Swimming briefly. My fitness journey officially started in 2009 as a Dragon Boat paddler from Republic Polytechnic. I was hooked on to the adrenaline of racing and particularly to the wonders of how different paddling styles could affect how well each boat glides. Rowing on the ergometer, like paddling in a Dragon Boat, demands a set of technical skills that are so often overlooked by athletes eager for that quick dose of cardiovascular work. I have always been a firm believer that performing any movement with good form should be the basis of every workout.

Through MobRow, I wish to change athletes’ perspective of rowing and moving well. MobRow provides athletes with the platform to enjoy the best rowing experience and at the same time achieve their fullest potential in rowing. Besides training, I also like to advocate for the softer aspects of trainings, wherein lies the multifaceted nature of competitive sports.

My background in psychology and more specifically, my interest in sports psychology, has broadened my perspective on what constitutes an ideal mental state for training competitively. Building mental toughness should hold an equal importance to building your physical strength and fitness in excelling at competitive sports. More importantly, athletes can take mental skills and lessons from the gym into other aspects of their lives.

Our body is a wonderful creation. I firmly believe that simple bio hacks such as breathing techniques and understanding how the autonomic nervous system works not only supplement training performance, but also improve overall well-being. It doesn’t simply take brute strength and gruelling training routines to do well; there’s more to unveil in the much-forsaken realms of mental tenacity and breath work.

These are some of the simplest yet most challenging aspects of training to achieve, that I have come to appreciate through years of competitive experiences in both Dragon Boat and CrossFit. I wish to share them with all who are keen to take training smart to a whole new level!
